No Mort Tomorrows

As the Voice went to press on Friday (early for the holiday weekend), there was some confusion in the media about whether Georgia president Eduard Shevardnadze blamed Russia—and its desires for an oil pipeline to the Caspian Sea—for the attempt on his life last week. Nearly every major paper in the world--but not The New York Times--reported last week that Shevardnadze made this claim. Later in the week, however, international wire services said he denied ever saying it. More next week....Never thought I'd find myself praising an advertiser-owned magazine, but the January/February issue of Benetton's Colors--devoted entirely to the topic of death--is nothing short of fascinating.
