The storefronts along Mulberry, Elizabeth, and Mott, having spent the last century contentedly selling pecorino cheese and pork chops, sausages and souvenirs, were taken aback when the purveyors of chic merchandise began ogling their timeworn facades. Now, the turnover has hit what social scientists call the tipping point: babushkaed grannies look lost amid the cashmere emporiums, and fashionable shoppers from all over the world stalk the cobblestoned streets in search of the next new thing.
