Date Nuts

The Clock Is Ticking. . . .How Scared of Millennial Meltdown Are You?

Are you nervous about Y2K? I think that fear is being whipped up by people wanting to make a profit. Any society that can put striped toothpaste in a tube and a man on the moon isn't going to let computers crash.

Are you stockpiling? Absolutely not, but having said that, I will keep a couple of hundred dollars out of the bank. I'll take my Amex card to Macy's and hope the computers wipe out my debt and my college loans that are 30 years old.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? If I woke up and the icebox had blown, I'd die without cold milk for my Entenmann's pecan Danish.

Are you nervous about Y2K? No. People just want an excuse to freak out, and the powers that be want to lecture them by saying, "Be careful or you'll hurt yourself."

Are you stockpiling? No, and I'm actually flying to Illinois, in defiance of all millennium logic. I'm going to a New Year's party in a nutty thrift store dress just so my parents can ask, "When are you going to start dressing like an adult?"

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? I'd probably adjust better than most people to catastrophe.

Are you nervous about Y2K? It's for real, but I'm not anxious about it because I normally don't even know what time it is. Someone made my computer Y2K compliant and it's broken already.

Are you stockpiling? Absolutely not.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? My new black shoes with the red crosses on the top. If I woke up and they'd been destroyed, I'd know that Armageddon had arrived.

Are you nervous about Y2K? No. In terms of terrorism, this December 31 isn't a significant date on the Muslim calendar, so I think all this fear and hype is just that.

Are you stockpiling? No, I'll just do what I normally do, which is to live off the food in my pantry. I've got nub-size licorice in there now.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? I'd be happy if the whole thing crashed and I had to stay in bed with my boyfriend for a couple of weeks while they figured it all out.

Are you nervous about Y2K? Yes, but I'm more disturbed that they're taking advantage of the panic by increasing the cost of basic things like water. I spend a lot of time in Los Angeles, and my water company has hiked their prices.

Are you stockpiling? No. I always have a little extra food, but taking your money out of the bank to hide it under the bed is dangerousbecause it increases everyone's chance of getting robbed.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? Prenatal vitamins and hot water. I'd be lost if I couldn't take a bath.

Are you nervous about Y2K? Not at all. They're hyping this because it's a Mars Attacks situation. They want us to think that the government is going to save us from something awful.

Are you stockpiling? No, but my parents are. My father has lots of food and water and has taken all his money out of the bank.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? If it all blows, I'll sleep in until they fix it.

Are you nervous about Y2K? No, I think it's exciting. To get to the year 2000 at my age, it means something.

Are you stockpiling? Only water for my cats.

What's the one thing you couldn't live without if the Y2K meltdown actually occurred? I have everything I need. I also spent 19 months in Korea, so my basic philosophy is "What's going to be is going to be."
