One Hundred Years of Pulchritude

Photographs by Sandra-Lee Phipps

In a century that has witnessed everything from whalebone corsets to flapper frocks, poodle skirts to micro-minis, plastic hot pants to tie-dyed undies, only to end with what seems like the whole population slouching toward Bethlehem in jeans and running shoes, it was a relief to see the flame of fashion flickering in DUMBO the other day. At Fashionlab, which bills itself as a "multi-media installation showcasing the work of designers, architects, and visualists whose work is future conscious," participants took clothes as seriously as Paul Poiret and Mario Fortuny and Elsa Schiaparelli and Mary Quant once did, ready to greet the next hundred years dressed in all manner of avant-garde frippery.
