Accusations Are Flying About Presidential Candidates’ Drug Use. Are You Under the Influence?

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? I wouldn't care unless they were still using them. With so many people in jail under the Rockefeller Drug Laws, it's hypocritical not to hold politicians to the same standards.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? Any major crime. Victimless crimes don't matter to me.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? I don't think a black man can be elected to the presidency. Do you honestly think Republicans are going to vote for Alan Keyes?

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? No, and actually I think it's good. It makes them more human. I would only draw the line at heroin.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? I'd care if they were still using drugs. On a more specific note, something like Chappaquiddick—that ended Teddy Kennedy's presidential hopes and it should have.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? My current writing and my erotic short stories.

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? Yes, I care 100 percent, and it makes no difference if he used them when he was a young man or if it was just pot or something like cocaine.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? I'd look at his marriage, his behavior toward his family. On the other hand, there are more complicated things to consider, like matters of conscience. Clinton had every right to refuse to go to Vietnam.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? Yes, because you do things when you're young, never thinking that one day you might want to be in politics.

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? That shouldn't be a factor in this day and age. Some of our greatest artists, writers, and scientists have been drug users.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? Something significant, like finding out that he'd beaten his wife or been involved in a hit-and-run accident. Clinton's affair had no bearing on his ability to govern, and people on Wall Street weren't complaining about it.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? No. There are probably things in my life that people would question me about.

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? I care with Bush only because he's changed his statement so many times and he's a hypocrite.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? Whatever crossed the line from consensual to coercive—if they physically hurt someone.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? There might be things I did when I was younger that people would want to attack me for.

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? There's too much emphasis on perfection. I'd only care about the drugs if they were in some kind of cartel and making a profit.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? There should be some things left behind closed doors. For instance, I wouldn't need to know if Al Gore had been arrested for battery.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? Oh, God, yes. I'd make Monica Lewinsky look like a saint.

Do you care if a candidate has used drugs? As long as they're functioning, it's irrelevant. I've never used drugs anyway. I've always needed lead shoes to keep myself on the ground.

What personal behavior would stop you from voting for someone? It's hard for me to get interested in any of the current crop of people. Accidents happen. We're guided by strange forces in politics.

Are there skeletons in your closet that might hinder a run for office? Of course. I'm in the theater.
