Do cancer clusters scare you? I'm struck by the fact that these recent ones are so specifically located. It's really block by block and, in the case of the Upper East Side, in such a rich quadrant.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? I ride my bike, so I'm aware of the air because sometimes I can actually feel it. The water is more mysterious. Why is the water in the kitchen sink so bad, and the water in the bathroom so clean and good?

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? I'd feel I should move, though whether I'd actually do it is another thing. I'd want to know how much carcinogenic material was there. How much mercury, for instance. As much as is in my teeth?

Do cancer clusters scare you? No. For the people who live in them, it's just their bad luck. It has more to do with how they live, and with what they eat, than with anything else.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? Although health matters to me, I do know that chemicals are in everything. I drink both bottled water and tap water and don't pay attention to what might have been added to my food.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? No, not unless I or somebody in my family got sick.

Do cancer clusters scare you? Somewhat, but it may be because I'm reading A Civil Action right now, which is scaring me a lot.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? Yes, but I don't do a lot beyond drinking bottled water and maintaining a water filter at home.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? Maybe, if I thought it would have long-term adverse effects. On the other hand, I wouldn't actively choose to live at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel.

Do cancer clusters scare you? No. You have to think about it in terms of other things. Compare 10 people with cancer in Long Island to 100 people with cancer in Hoboken and then consider the rate of illness compared to population density.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? To the degree that I drink mineral water and not water from the tap.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? I'd have different degrees of anxiety based on the kind of contamination. I can say that if my neigborhood were radioactive, I'd move.

Do cancer clusters scare you? They heighten my sense of vulnerability. If you have a genetic predisposition for cancer, you're already nervous.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? I have a water filter, and I boil water for certain things.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? There are so many other factors. People used to ask me if I was going to leave San Francisco because of the earthquakes. In terms of cancer, the fact that generations of the same family have lived in certain neighborhoods introduces the issue of heredity.

Do cancer clusters scare you? No, because I've seen statistical analysis suggesting that there will always be clusters somewhere. Most people believe the Latin adage Post hoc, ergo propter hoc, which means if A follows B, A is because of B. That's just not true.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? I have a new child and I'm more concerned for him.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? If the neighborhood was a mile from a nuclear plant and the contamination was flagrantly related to that, yes.

Do cancer clusters scare you? No, in fact I find them hard to believe. Maybe it's the power lines, and maybe on the Upper East Side, it's all that money.

Are you concerned about water and air quality? I'm aware of the bad air here when I visit friends in Denver.

Would you move if you found out your neighborhood was toxic? Yes, my mother would make me.
