Good God

God Is Everywhere in Campaign 2000. Are Candidates Pandering for Votes or Preaching From the Heart?

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? I think George Bush is taking a strong stand on religion only because he wants to attract important groups that might not necessarily vote for him, like the Jewish community. He's also using it against Gore to prove that he's the moral candidate, the one untainted by Bill Clinton's fooling around.

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? Yes, people in New York have no time to think about religion. We're too busy for God.

Do you believe in God? I'm a Muslim.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? It's hypocrisy. Look at Dick Cheney—this extreme-right Christian whose lesbian daughter is working as the gay liaison at Coors. Did you see Cheney's wife challenging Cokie Roberts to prove their openly lesbian daughter ever publicly came out of the closet?

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? Yes. I'm from Kansas and I know from experience that New York is a nation independent from the rest of the United States.

Do you believe in God? I was raised a Methodist. I love hymns with all those complex harmonies.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? It's entirely political, carefully crafted bullshit. Where are all the other candidates, like Lyndon LaRouche, and why doesn't the media cover his campaign?

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? Yes. There are so many distractions here. We look up and see skyscrapers; people outside the city see stars. Maybe that leads to greater contemplation.

Do you believe in God? I was raised a Christian, but it's not the way I relate to God.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? Yes, and it also means something to me when they do talk about God.

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? There are always going to be more people who know about religion than know about politics. It's a common thread. Even if you weren't Christian, you might know that Jesus was on the cross, but you don't necessarily know who your state senator is.

Do you believe in God? Yes. I go to shul.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? The more interesting question is whether being religious means being just and fair, or whether politicians are using it as a kind of code to imply that.

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? I don't know. Perhaps New Yorkers are more spiritual than religious.

Do you believe in God? My family is extremely religious, but faith is more important to me than whether I go to church. I'm more interested in how faith relates to daily living.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? Yes. If that's one of the many ways they represent themselves, so be it.

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? I'm not following the campaign—I just know that I'm voting for Al Gore. I wouldn't care if all of a sudden he got up and said he'd personally seen God and that his head was going to explode from the experience. I'd still vote for him.

Do you believe in God? I'm an atheist.

Do you believe candidates are sincere when they talk about God? I believe they're serious when they say it, but they're not speaking to me because I don't care what religion they are. Organized religion scares me.

Is religion a bigger factor in the rest of the country than it is in New York? Yes, much bigger. We live in total freedom here. The only people who really bother you about religion are mentally ill.

Do you believe in God? I'm a Wiccan.
