What was your favorite movie of last year?Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Hollywood doesn't make movies like that because they're afraid they won't make any money from them.

What's your favorite movie of all time? Enemy of the State. The first 20 minutes were amazing. You come out of the movie thinking, "Yeah, they know everything about us now." Your Social Security number used to be a secret, but not anymore. Pretty soon, if they haven't done it already, they'll be coming out with things like the eye-scan and the palm-scan.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? Abe Beame. He did a lot for the city. He happened to be mayor during a very difficult period of New York City history, but he managed to take the reins and keep hold of them.

What was your favorite movie of last year?Blue Streak, with Martin Lawrence.

What's your favorite movie of all time? J.D.'s Revenge. It's a black movie about a guy who goes around killing people. He died a long time ago for something he didn't do, and somebody bad gets into his body and sleeps with a lot of women and does terrible things.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? My best friend, Fern. She's a terrific person who never gave up on me even when I was in a lot of trouble. She'd come get me and let me sleep at her house, and when I'd offer to pay she'd refuse to take the money. She has stuck with me through thick and thin. I'm very lucky to know her.

What was your favorite movie of last year? Wonder Boys. It was the best movie of the year. It's from the book by Michael Chabon. Coincidentally, I'm reading another of his novels for a books-on-tape series I record for.

What's your favorite movie of all time? Young Frankenstein. I loved Madeline Kahn. She was a great actress.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? Gil Scott-Heron. He's been an educator, a poet, and a fantastic musician who inspired a lot of people. I don't think he's been recognized enough for his many contributions.

What was your favorite movie of last year? Dancer in the Dark. It was really good. I'm not even a fan of Björk, but right after seeing the movie, I went out and bought the soundtrack.

What's your favorite movie of all time? The Sixth Sense. It was full of very new concepts.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award?Denzel Washington. It's time to show him some love. I heard that the studio didn't want to green-light The Bone Collectorbecause they didn't think Middle America would go to a movie carried by Denzel. To me that's just incredible.

What was your favorite movie of last year? Traffic. I had some mixed feelings about it, but I thought it told a good story. The acting was wonderful. Benicio Del Toro was great, and I was really surprised by how much I liked Michael Douglas. He's someone I usually don't like.

What's your favorite movie of all time? The Godfather.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? Harriet Tubman.

What was your favorite movie of last year? Tango. It was in fact the only movie I saw last year, and it was also my favorite.

What's your favorite movie of all time? Never Mind the Bollocks, a documentary about the Sex Pistols. I also love The Sex Pistols in Texas.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? I'd split it between Gandhi and Prabhupada, the man who started the Hare Krishna movement.

What was your favorite movie of last year? Dark Days. It's a beautiful documentary by Marc Singer about people who live in the tunnels of the subway.

What's your favorite movie of all time? Either Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas or Dreams by Kurosawa. With Wenders, you really have to give in to his vision and just wait for it to reveal itself.

To whom would you give a lifetime achievement award? Eleanor Roosevelt. She said, "Always look fear in the face."
