First, the bad news: The Squarepusher/Plaid American tour has been canceled, which means folks yearning for the sonic terrorism of Mr. Tom Jenkinson will have to wait. The good news: Stereotopia, the massive rave—which takes over the entire Hammerstein Ballroom—is still on. One wonders why the two big-shot professional companies promoting the canceled Creamfields and Mekka festivals couldn't pull them off, but young 'un Josh Isaac, the mastermind behind the gargantuan Global Bass parties, was able to keep things running as scheduled. Isaac's now defunct Global Bass events were, briefly, hot shit before too much aggression and dwindling attendance caused them to fizzle out. But with Stereotopia's massive lineup, he's about to show folks how it's done right. On the bill: techno legends Derrick May and Joey Beltram, and two members of the psychedelic house trio the Hardkiss Brothers (Gavin and Robbie); and in the drum'n'bass room, the usual unbeatable d'n'b jocks Bad Company, Ed Rush & Optical, and Moving Fusion with MC Rymetyme. Not satisfied? Turntablist fanatics get their fix via the X-Ecutioners, junkyard junglists get Ming & FS, and 2steppers get Emma Feline. And many more. For those who want to avoid the kiddie party, there's the five-day Sin Festival, which will delight you smarty-pants techno freaks out there. All manner of ambient, idm, minimal techno, and electro artists will be present. While the entire fest is solid stuff, featuring Machine Drum, I-Sound, Ulysses, among others, the line-up on the 25th is a jaw-dropper: live sets from the DMX Krew, those Rephlex Records electro-pop bad boys, and Mr. Velcro Fastener, whose last disc, Lucky Bastards Living Up North, fulfills your guilty early-electro pleasures; plus Exzakt, Resident Alien, X-Object, Rage, and more.
