More About

Store windows and ommercial facades, a favorite subject for photographers since the medium's earliest days, are a subtly appropriate theme at this time of year. Rather than survey the topic, MacGill suggests the broad range of approaches with idiosyncratically intelligent work by Eugene Atget, Harry Callahan, William Christenberry, and Lee Friedlander. Artlessness would seem to have no place here, but six of Andy Warhol's dumbest black-and-white pictures steal the show. Chosen from among the hundreds of 8 x 10 photos Warhol left stacked in boxes when he died, these shots of sale signs, shoe displays, a French postcard rack, and other quotidian pop art are tossed-off Weegees, effortless William Kleins—so bad they're brilliant.
