Habari Gani? 'Tis the season to dust off the Kinara, decorate the house red, black, and green, and bust out the Kwanzaa flag. The Center heightens this weeklong holiday for African American queer New Yorkers as they embrace the Nguzo Saba (seven principles ranging from self-determination and communal solidarity to faith) during its 16th annual Kwanzaa celebration. Co-hosted by 12 organizations within the community, including the Audre Lorde Project, GRIOT Circle, African Asian Latina Lesbians United, Gay Men of African Descent, and Black Pride NYC, the fete explores the principle of creativity with performances from 5 to 7 by activist, writer, and performer Imani Henry, gospel singer Rajdulari, the Illumination Choir, drummer Bernadette McGowen, and others. Also check out the African market from noon to 9 and Karumu (a communal feast) from 7 to 9vegetarians, don't fret, there'll be eats for you too! Umoja!
