You can't open your in-box these days without being flooded with invites for book signings and forums cataloging the high crimes of the Bush administration. But this two-day conference of leading progressive pols and thinkers aims to do more than just bash Bush. "We all know about the failures of the Bush administration," says Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, which is co-sponsoring the event with the New Democracy Project, a liberal think tank founded by Mark Green. "This is really about coming together to say what we stand for and building the progressive infrastructure and forward-looking agenda that we need to turn this country around." Speakers include New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., Dean campaign maverick Joe Trippi, former national security adviser Sandy Berger, former labor secretary Robert Reich, ex-senator Gary Hart, and John Kerry's top policy wonk Sarah Bianchi, plus authors Kevin Phillips, Barbara Ehrenreich, and Mark Hertsgaard. The conference was inspired by two new books: What We Stand For: A Platform for a Changing America, edited by Green, and Taking Back America—and Taking Down the Radical Right (Nation Books). Admission includes copies of both, plus a box lunch on Saturday.
