More About

Since opening its doors two years ago, the Bowery Poetry Club has helped revitalize the poetry and spoken-word scene in the East Village. In addition to providing a showcase for both established and aspiring wordsmiths, the staff has also developed a creative atmosphere where artists and activists can meet, share ideas, and offer support to one another—during the recent RNC, it remained open 24 hours a day for just that purpose. Tonight, BPC celebrates these achievements with performances by some friends, including the always insightful and provocative Eric Bogosian, star of the film Talk Radio, playwright of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll, and author of the novel Mall; Maggie Estep, a poet with the collections Diary of an Emotional Idiot, Hex, and Brooklyn Nights under her belt; John S. Hall, a clever and witty spoken-word artist and leader of the band King Missile; Sapphire, a BPC regular and author of Push; and Sekou Sundiata, who has appeared on HBO's Def Poetry and whose poems were published in Spirit & Flame: An Anthology of African American Poetry. Afterward, DJ Celena Glenn keeps the party going into the wee hours. And to top it all off, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the nearby Bowery Mission.
