Dance

Patsy Tarr's been watching dance so long that she sees the world through a choreographic lens, she tells us in the introduction to this sleek collection of photographs, many repurposed from the twice-yearly journal she publishes with design director Abbott Miller. The photos have been spotted, blown up beyond life-size, at the Walter Reade Theater; you can also avail yourselves of them—and other shots from the 2wice archives—in a deck of oversize playing cards that retails for $250 ($150 is a tax-deductible donation to Tarr's foundation, which supports art, dance, film, and performance).

The pictures (by Josef Astor, Andrew Eccles, Anders Overgaard, Peter Rad, Tony Rinaldo, Joanne Savio, Martin Schoeller, and Christian Witkin) proceed, for the most part, from shoots that paired performers and photographers in unique "duets." Merce Cunningham's dancers spilled out onto their Westbeth roof; a legendary Paul Taylor work was shot in his studio; Jamie Bishton posed dancers naked and clothed in Central Park landscapes, reinterpreting Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe. Nancy Dalva's chirpy, elliptical prose connects and celebrates the images. Explore their world at 2wice.org.
