Dance

New York's in the grip of méxicoNOW, a festival of film, theater, music, visual art, and dance, including an exhibition of photos and posters of contemporary Mexican dance (through Saturday at the Performing Arts Library); a concert by emerging Mexican choreographers working in New York (this weekend at NYU's new Skirball Center); an event called "RhyMex: Mexican Hip Hop Across Borders" (at El Museo del Barrio on Saturday); and the local debut of an award-winning modern-dance troupe, founded in 1992 and relocated six years ago to the seaside town of Mazatlán, now a center of artistic activity.

Delfos Danza Contemporánea's artistic directors, Victor Manuel Ruiz and Claudia Lavista, also perform in Brief Moments, a suite of six works that plumbs the perpetual impasse and angst between and among the sexes. Composers include Meredith Monk and Yann Tiersen; also on the bill is the very bizarre Trio and String, through which prowl two women and a man, bare-chested and wearing huge skirts made of pleated craft paper. Delfos's oldest work, it has real bite.
