Rolling Stonejust put out a thick new guide to record albums—a useful and readable one, by the looks of it, but still one that casts an ever smaller roster of Important Artists in stone, as subsequent sequels to its original 1979 guide (loaded with totally entertaining and charmingly brief zero-star Dave Marsh reviews of great hard rock and disco albums you never heard of) have increasingly done over the quarter-century since. As recorded music turns more and more liquid and ephemeral (thanks to downloads, mix tapes, bootlegs, promos, demos, EPKs, CD/DVD DualDisc hybrids, ringtones, you name it), such a canon makes less sense than ever. Several of the dancey selections below barely even exist in the real world. But that doesn't mean they're less interesting than the ones that do.
