One weekend back in 1970, 26-year-old Ohio insurance salesman and Air Force reservist Benjamin Franklin Van Dervort, calling himself JD Blackfoot, recorded an LP entitled The Ultimate Prophecy, which Mercury Records soon put out. It may or may not be a holy grail for today's young stoner-folk and freak-rock generation, but it should be, given poetry like: "Lain out on the dawn of creation/The king hath named it ground/And he hath given to the earth people/ To sit and look profound/But they will be known as love creatures/Born to live on sound!" Decades hence in New Zealand, helped out by friends from Mountain and Pure Prairie League, Blackfoot commemorates the Battle of Little Bighorn with a frequently gorgeous if ridiculous concept CD about Native American horse legends and General Custer. He is also no longer a Cleveland Indians fan.
