The Jerk (Universal) "I was born a poor black child," Steve Martin famously intones at the outset of the 1979 comedy that established the stand-up vet as a big-screen star. The scant supplements on this "26th Anniversary" edition include a ukulele lesson and an extended version of the cat- juggling filmstrip.

Le Notti Bianche (Criterion) Visconti still gets lumped in with the neorealists on the basis of a couple early films, but most of the work he's best remembered for today transcends that label. Coming immediately after his expressionist masterpiece Senso, this 1957 adaptation of Dostoyevsky's "White Nights" (later the basis of Bresson's Four Nights of a Dreamer) stars Marcello Mastroianni as a clerk who falls for a woman (Maria Schell) who's awaiting the return of another man (Jean Marais). Extras include a collection of interviews with various critics and Visconti collaborators, screen test footage of Mastroianni and Schell, and a recorded reading of the source story, downloadable as an MP3 file.

Wishing Stairs (Tartan) The third film in a loose K-horror trilogy also comprising Whispering Corridors and Memento Mori, this is another tale of supernatural happenings in an all-girls school.
