Man's Best Defense

Tyler Eison turns pit bull pups into deadly weapons

"These are not normal dogs," says Tyler Eison, gazing reverently at a litter of seven-week-old pit bull puppies. "I like having very vicious, angry dogs. I'm going to teach them not to like other dogs. I'm going to agitate them, make them aggressive. That way when it's about business, they are going to be serious."

More About

As a real estate investor and auto dealer, Eison, 41, values aggression in his dogs for protecting both himself and his property. "My dogs are my pistols," he says, cracking a gold-tooth smile. "I have my dogs on my property, and I have faith in them. If they're coming at you, you have to shoot them to kill them."

Tough people want tough dogs, but if you want a truly vicious dog you have to create it yourself. With his latest litter of three girls and a boy, Eison is trying to re-create a bloodline of fighting dogs he owned 20 years ago (though he insists his fighting days are long over). He's making a stud dog out of his prized companion Rock, an eerily silent pit bull with a golden brown coat and pink nose. Rock's first litter was born in early May, and Eison watched its progress daily to see which of the puppies would develop more of their father's traits.

Eison kennels the pups in a fenced-in corner of his backyard, in a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes in St. Albans, Queens. When the dogs get older, he'll move them to another house nearby, where his wife and stepchildren live, and where he keeps his adult dogs—a Cane Corso and three pit bulls—in large pens out back. He has three more dogs, two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler, at friends' houses.

Hoping to turn Rock's offspring into deadly weapons, Eison started antagonizing them when they were around nine weeks old. One afternoon he held an all-brown puppy by its midsection and for several minutes forced it to lie across the neck of one its sisters, who Eison believes might be the pick of the litter. Eison didn't think the brown pup was willing enough to play rough, so he decided to force it into a scrum. After a minute or so, its sister became angry and began to growl and bite the brown one's ears. After the incident the brown puppy cowered under a metallic-blue racing motorcycle Eison keeps in the backyard and peed.

Eison's love for pit bulls goes back to his childhood. At nine years old, he was spending the night at his grandparents' house when a heater caught fire. Eison was asleep on the couch; the family's pit bull mix nipped him on the leg until he woke up and roused his grandparents, saving their lives. The dog had been feral, Eison says, but people in the neighborhood paid top dollar for her puppies.

Ten years later, in the late '80s, Eison's car was rear-ended. An argument erupted as two men leapt out of the other car. One of them said he was going to get something out of his trunk. Eison guessed this something was a gun, so he wasted no time in loosing Conan on him. "I wasn't going to let him kill me, so my dog took care of him," he remembers. "I sicced my dog on that guy, man, and beat the other one up myself. I had no choice."

Eison's belief that his dogs offer essential protection in his sometimes rough neighborhood was only reinforced last month when his stepson Glen Moore, 22, was hit in the head with a baseball bat in Howard Beach, in what authorities are calling a bias crime. The attack, says Eison, never would have happened if Moore had had one of the dogs with him.

Basically purebred mutts, pit bulls were developed from the crossbreeding of bull- and bear-baiting dogs with terriers used in rat-baiting competitions. The result was a canine with the tremendous jaw pressure of a bulldog and the athleticism and ferocity of a terrier, which kills its prey by grabbing it in its mouth and whipping it from side to side. With his bloodline, Eison is trying to emphasize the violence of a terrier's bite, while losing nothing of a pit bull's agility and intelligence. He has mated Rock with an all-white English bull terrier named Lady. The result, he hopes, will be dogs of 45 to 50 pounds that can more than hold their own against dogs twice their size. He'll mate the best female of this first litter with her father. This inbreeding—called linebreeding—will help Eison isolate the traits he seeks.

Studies have suggested that pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. In evaluations by the American Temperament Testing Society, the pit bull passed at a rate of 83.4 percent, just below the beloved golden retriever and 4.5 points higher than the collie. That said, the city's shelters reported that almost 6,000 bull breeds (pit bulls and pit bull mixes) were admitted in the last fiscal year. Though they represent 37 percent of all dogs in city shelters, bull breeds accounted for almost half of the 7,136 dogs euthanized in shelters last year. Pit bulls are routinely adopted, but shelter officials say a disproportionate number can't be because they haven't been socialized properly. Some have spent their whole lives in cages.

this right here is when using the N word is necessary

  • Baloneycaldwell 07/05/2011 5:46:00 PM

This man is a purebred idiot. It is people like him that make a Pitbull ban necessary because they keep the survival of the fittest and meanest truth in the Pitbull bloodline. The great thing about this article though is when one of these dogs hurts someone, which will happen, it shows the man had prior knowledge and responspiblity for the dogs behavior. He won't be able to play the "oh they were sweet, mellow dogs.. " game and he can easily be sued and put in prison for felony endangerment to get him in his own special kennel where he truly belongs. visit www.dogs bite dot org

i hope this man is dead. may he drown in his own blood & rot in hell.

  • Stephanieelizabeth 04/07/2011 7:37:00 PM

This man is horrible. He is abusing his dogs. One day one of these poor pits is going to get loose and attack someone in the neighborhood, and then we'll get another article about how unstable pits are...with no mention of the fact that its owner has TRAINED it to be cruel.

  • Pitbull owner 02/02/2011 6:22:00 AM

Ignorant F***. Every other pitbull owners are trying to get past all this bad rep but here you are contributing to the problem.

  • karen 12/02/2010 1:04:00 AM

You are a sick sob and should be tortured til you die. I hope you get your **** bit off. I hope someone recognizes you and turns you in. How can a human being be that cruel? If anyone knows this guy, please let animal control know what he's doing.

  • Pitbull puppie lover 10/29/2010 10:46:00 PM

Dogs that are good defense dogs are trained that way. Yes, they have a natural aggression in them, but only when it is invoked by treatment while being raised. If you have pitbull puppies you can make the choice on raising them, as to what kind of dog you are going to have.

  • Kai 09/23/2010 7:35:00 AM

You're so grateful to the Pitbull that saved you as a kid that you're (in)breeding these Pitties to be aggressive, unstable, vicious dogs that hurt eachother and contribute to tons of Pitbulls just like them being banned, surrendered, and murdered every day. And on top of all this, you claim to be a Pitbull Lover. Great logic there, you worthless asshole. Go fuck yourself with a rusty iron pike, and may you burn in hell.

  • Tammi O 08/15/2010 11:19:00 PM

You are lending to the absolute misconception of "Pitt Bull" breeds and clearly enhancing the already pungent reputation of these phenomenal dogs, besides being a disgrace to the human race. You should not be allowed to own an animal and I am sorry for your children, would you treat them the same way as your dogs? Would you like them to be your "gun" in your old age? I fell into the misnomer of pitt bulls until we adopted one, she is a dream. Much more intelligent than most humans unfortunately and so eager to please. She has no aggression in her what so ever and will help raise pitt bull awareness

  • Ray H 08/15/2010 11:06:00 PM

I think that this is barbaric in the worst sense. These dogs were not meant to be used as weapons or any such ill manor such as fighting or even guard dogs. they are inocent creatures that deserve good lives same as anything else. I think that most people suck

  • Stephanie 04/04/2010 6:48:00 AM

Just looking at this so-called 'man', Tyler Eison, makes me SICK. How DARE him use such a loving, loyal canine as a "pistol". These dogs are living, breathing creatures, a pistol is cold DEAD metal. What a comparison!! You, my friend, YOU are a moronic jerk-hole, and you give men like my husband (who is black) and who have Pit Bulls a HORRIBLE name! And how DARE you breed and then inbreed, you are horrible HORRIBLE man, I feel sorry for your own children!! What if one of your daughters doesn't turn out as much like 'you' as you would like? Would you 'breed' with her so that 'your' offspring with her will be more like how YOU wanted HER to be?? You're a joke. Plain and simple. You make me sick. One day, one day you will pay for what you've done and are doing. Nature will just take it's course, and it's not a good future I see in store for you. You can't mess around with nature the way you are and not get burned, or BIT in your case. I see that this has went on and ON and ONNN. There are articles from 2005 about you. I am in HIGH hopes that the person who WROTE this article about you turned you in after righting it. And I'm also in HIGH hopes that they published this article to get the word out to good people about you, so that we can stop you!

  • Dena 01/29/2010 10:20:00 PM

This man revolts me to no end. Although I am not a religious person, I believe and follow the Ethic of Reciprocity (the "do unto others" principle). Someone needs to beat, harass, and abuse this man for decades. I'd volunteer to do this job. I own an APBT mix and have fostered several other "bully breed" type dogs. Not one of them showed any human aggression at all. Why? Because dogs are a mirror of their owner's handling. My APBT mix is in training to become a certified therapy dog and has passed every temperament test he's ever taken. He was attacked by a Shih Tzu just a month ago. This man needs to be jailed. Where is the ASPCA? Only a sociopath would behave in such a manner. I don't need my dogs to fight by battles for me. He's creating violent dogs that *will* do harm to someone and make the news in the near future. I'd bet my life on that. But who will be penalized? All the responsible APBT owners who have done nothing wrong. And, shame on you, Village Voice, for being idiotic enough to address this man's behavior as "his love of pit bulls." You should know better. You're only validating the fear in people's minds when it comes to these dogs. I love my APBT mix and every pit bull type dog I've ever worked with, so much so that I've trained them to be productive members of our society. Blame bad owners, not dogs.

  • Jordan 11/13/2009 7:08:00 PM

Idiots like this are why this breed has been targeted by the media, polluting the gene pool with overly aggressive, overly dominant dogs. Aggression is a byproduct of fear, dogs that fear everything will bite, and will end up on the news. Idiots like this Eison need to be locked up and banned from owning or producing dangerous dogs like this. Pit bulls are great dogs, and f*cks like this guy and Mike Vick, among others, are breeding them for the wrong reasons. If aggressive dogs are great for protection, how come police don't use them? Because they are unpredictable. Ban stupid people not dogs!

  • Brittney 11/13/2009 6:18:00 PM

It's ignorant jerk offs like this who are ruining the bully breed community. He feels powerful "playing God". What he doesn't know is that a good protection dog does not need to be "agitated". A good protection dog has a clear enough mind to decipher a real "threat" from a non-threat. This type of dog is a friendly, stable and balanced dog. It is a confident dog who does not cower out out of fear. A good protection dog can be brought anywhere and around anyone. It is comfortable near other dogs and animals. Only when this dog signals a true threat will it act and attempt to enable the threat. These poor dogs that he's ruined need to all be fixed. He also needs to be fixed so that he will not reproduce anything remotely like him. He is absolutely ruining others rights to own bully breeds and is shattering the image of bully breeds everywhere. Maybe if this ignorant Monkey picked up a book and learned himself a thing or two he wouldn't look like such a jack ass.... what a joke. This is a very sad and disgusting man. I pity the child that gets bit because of him and the dog that's destroyed because of it.

  • Liz 10/30/2009 12:31:00 AM

You are a sick bastard. I got 3 pits and I would do the world for them but people like you is what gives them a bad name.

  • Joe 10/28/2009 6:38:00 PM

How in the world can this be reported as news? There are so many things wrong with this story and this person I don't know where to begin. First of all he is breeding human aggression in to a dog never meant to be that way. If he wants a protector get a guard dog. Secondly he has a history of dog fighting and he is breeding aggressive dogs. So if it walks like a dog fighter and talks like a dog fighter then well you fill in the blanks. Thirdly he is forcing these dogs to fight each other I'm pretty sure that is a felony in most states. Lastly he plans on breeding his meanest b!tch with her father obviously he has no knowledge of genetics and what inbreeding does to dogs. This man is not worth the ground he walks on. There is a reason we have thousands of pit bulls killed every year and it is because of worthless people like this one.

  • Mel 10/28/2009 5:14:00 PM

I am beyond disgusted that you felt the need to interview such a trashy and disgusting human being. Don't promote what he is doing- he should be in jail. Shame on you. I hope I run into this worthless loser one day.

  • Emily 10/28/2009 6:09:00 AM

Fucking douchebag. Your dogs should be taken away from you and then you should be hung by your balls in Times Square. Asshole. Go rot in hell and get raped by Satan with Vick.

  • Beth 10/28/2009 6:02:00 AM

This man should absolutely be in jail. He should be stuck in jail and threatened with death, just as happens to millions of pit bulls all over the country because of maniacs like this. There is NO EXCUSE for a puke like this. He and Michael Vick should be castrated and shoved into a pit and forced to fight to the death, and whoever wins should be executed for being "too aggressive." This man makes me want to vomit. As a woman who has rescued pit bulls from bottom feeders like this man, I can't tell you how much damage people like this do. This is irresponsible and hideous, and a crime.

  • Michaela Bryant 10/23/2009 5:21:00 AM

this guy is disgusting! he obviously doesn't give a damn about his dogs.. he shouldn't even have any animal! its people like him who give this wonderful animal such a bad reputation. Pitbulls are wonderfully loyal animals who will do ANYTHING to please their owner, even if it means giving their own life. This man is a terrible person, and I hope one day he gets what is comming to him!

  • Spike 08/03/2009 7:10:00 AM

This article is a profile of the worst possible type of person to own a APBT. Instead of referring to this douche's "love" of Pitbulls, they should call it what it is, abuse and misuse. Anyone who thinks that its okay to "aggitate" aka abuse, a dog to make it aggressive, shouldn't be given the time of day let alone space in newsmedia by any thinking person. Also, this man is obviously still fighting dogs. Why else would he have so many fighting breeds in MULTIPLE locations with no obvious reasons given, he certainly isn't rescuing and rehabilitating them!!! Maybe the reporter should actually DIG DEEPER, and follow the story to a little something called the TRUTH, which is that Pits aren't bred to fight they are TRAINED by unfeeling assholes like this pathetic excuse for a human being. Sorry to go on a rant but as others have noted, this is the type of low life, boil on the butt of humanity that gives Pitbulls and responsible dog owners bad names!!!

  • eric 02/17/2009 6:55:00 AM

Well, now I have his name and location. Time to go on a manhunt :) I hate stupid insolent people like him - including the idiot writer that pursued this article.

  • e. campbell 12/01/2008 9:31:00 PM

i have a friend that has a female pit that has never been raise to be aggressive she is the most intelligent and sweet dog you could have, and i do believe it isnt all inherented, it is how someone raises the pup in the socialising stages from 4 wk to 18 wk it is important int hat age frame to teach the dog in training and love from a human to be less aggressive, there is still no dog that is 100% domesticated and never will be. therefore there should never be the 100% trust that the dog couldnt turn on someone that includes you sweet toy dogs.

  • robin 09/04/2008 5:30:00 AM

it's people like you that give pit bulls a bad rap. you don't have to train them to be mean to make sure the will protect you if you have a good relationship with your dog they will do what they have to to make sure you are safe. i understand wanting them to protect you but there are better ways of teaching them how instead of making them into monsters.my pit bull has never showed aggression for the whole 3 years that i had her until a stray dog went after my 3 year old son and she chased the other dog away without being told. it was because of her dedication to my son that she reacted that way and never again has she behaved that way. she knew he was in danger and acted accordingly.no command was given to her and she has no history of dog aggression.a dog is a pet not a wepon and should be treated accordingly.

  • Faith 08/11/2008 11:44:00 PM

The Village Voice should have titled this article 'The Village Idiot'...

  • Faith 07/16/2008 6:30:00 AM

Wow, a news source that couldn't think up more sensational crap on their own and had to rehash old articles. This piece of journalistic crap is why responsible pit bull owners like myself have to work so hard to break the stereotypes. This abusive dog owner is a moron and he is raising his dogs to be a danger to society. Why would any media group give this thug the time of day. Is he going to be upset when his dog attacks someone because dogs that are trained to be aggressive do not have the sense to discriminate between a burglar and an innocent adult, child or animal that crosses his path. Is he going to pay the price when his actions bring about more pit bull panic that leaves the rest of us fighting against BSL. I bet not. He will most likely rush out and buy another breed of dog, one that isn't banned - yet.

  • Ashley 07/15/2008 9:38:00 PM

This man is a monster! Who would want to work with him at all? This is the type of people that give these dogs a bad reputation. Dispicable! If you want a weapon get a gun, not an innocent dog to do something you obviously can't. Talk about lack of or absolutely NO manhood, Tyler Eison fits the bill perfectly.

A better title to this article would be "Ugly Dogs for Ugly People". We all know these idiots exist, but so far i have yet see someone stupid enough to come forward and put his name and face to it, PLUS his own business. Two homes, a business, that's a lot to lose when one of your weapons gets loose and mauls somebody. I hope law enforcement is paying attention because these dogs will most likely end up in the pit. And I hope this guy's homeowners insurance is paying attention...

  • wes 09/26/2007 8:58:00 PM

This guy is the reason why pitbulls get a bad rap. A proud owner of an ADBA registered chocolate red nosed APBT, it's sad to see such a naturally loving dog be turned into this guy's play thing or security weapon. If you want a protection dog, get a Rottwieller or German Shepard who for generations have been used for that purpose. Pitbull's are naturally good with people. They historically never have been used as protection dogs. PLEASE PLEASE look up "pitbull" in Wikipedia. This is truly accurate informations. I hope this breed someday gets a good rap and if they don't it'll be because of people like Eison.
