For those who don't celebrate Christmas, December 25 is a day of luxurious boredom. The options are limited: sleep, go to the movies, or carry in Chinese. For the past three years, Makor, a bastion of "Jewishisms," as one employee put it, has provided some additional entertainment by fulfilling one of the more beloved cultural clichés. While serving Chinese noodles, beef, and egg rolls (no pork), the center will offer an afternoon and evening of films featuring Jews: two by Billy Wilder (The Apartmentand Some Like It Hot) and two starring Gene Wilder (Young Frankenstein and Silver Streak). (Gene, who once called neuropsychiatry a far more convincing system of belief than Judaism, describes himself as a "Jewish Buddhist atheist.") The point here is not religion, but tradition—or at least creating one. Makor will set up eight-person tables so that guests can watch the movies while eating, talking, and getting drunk. Gentiles can come too.
