I love holidays that don't involve presents or party planning. This makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day one of the top holidays of the year. Start the weekend with Derrick Carter, one of our fave Chicago DJs, who is spinning at the new club Sol, which is now running with the musical direction of one Tom Mello. (Whoa, I just felt my Raver Age.) The last set we heard from the Chi-town jock was very classic, slow-tempo disco, but he can also spin the most energizing soulful house around, too. Richie Hawtin may not live here anymore, but his acolytes are spreading Hawtin-approved beats around the world. Troy Pierce, under his Louderbach moniker, visits APT for Kevin McHugh's series, The Novay. Pierce escaped the fashion industry to make minimal techno with a deep acid tinge for Underl_ne and Hawtin's label M-nus.
