I love holidays that don't involve presents or party planning. This makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day one of the top holidays of the year. Start the weekend with Derrick Carter, one of our fave Chicago DJs, who is spinning at the new club Sol, which is now running with the musical direction of one Tom Mello. (Whoa, I just felt my Raver Age.) The last set we heard from the Chi-town jock was very classic, slow-tempo disco, but he can also spin the most energizing soulful house around, too. With Joe Mama, Chris Soul, and Satellite Records' Scott Richmond. Fri @ 10, Sol, 609 W 29th, 212-643-6464

Richie Hawtin may not live here anymore, but his acolytes are spreading Hawtin-approved beats around the world. Troy Pierce, under his Louderbach moniker, visits APT for Kevin McHugh's series, The Novay. Pierce escaped the fashion industry to make minimal techno with a deep acid tinge for Underl_ne and Hawtin's label M-nus. Also spinning is fellow M-nus mate Marc Houle, who's got a funkier, more playful output. Thu @ 10, APT, 419 W 13th, 212-414-4245

Later in the week, DJ Shakey hosts one of her popular Nightowl Record Fairs. DJs and collectors will be selling all their 45s and seven-inch records only. Feel like you just entered the vortex and ended up in a scene from High Fidelity? All genres will be represented, and Shakey and DJs from her "Blackcrack" record collectors group —$mall Reaganomics, and Dave Withers, among others—will be spinning while you peruse the crates stuffed with garage rock, funk, soul, Latin, and German new wave. To be a seller you must be invited by Shakey or Sound Library's Jared—which means it's all primo vinyl.Tue @ 8, APT, 419 W 13th, 212-414-4245
