One of the biggest and dumbest fallacies of the avant-garde is the idea that the more popular and less outré music is, the more transitory its appeal. Overwhelming evidence in my experience suggests just the opposite—hooks and structure and songs recognizable as songs are easier to remember as time goes by than the lack thereof; they also greatly increase the possibility of adding up to a coherent personality that might leave a lasting impression. In contrast, I've got scores of records on my shelves that I know sounded really cool last time I put them on, but damned if I could pinpoint anything beyond that. This week, I have a few more.
