Master of Art

Jerry Saltz, Pulitzer Prize finalist

For almost eight years, Village Voiceart critic Jerry Saltz has been thrilling readers and alternately enthralling and infuriating the art-world community with what the Pulitzer Prize committee yesterday called his "fresh, down-to-earth pieces on the visual arts and other cultural topics." From his sharp takes on sacred cows—the cold eye he cast on the new MoMa is just one example—to his poignant dissection of downtown icons like Nan Goldin—Saltz offers breathtaking, no-hold-barred prose in a field that is all too often cursed with stuffy, academic writing.
