More About

"You either love it or you love it," wrote Michael Atkinson of Taxi Driver nearly 30 years after Voicecritic Andrew Sarris didn't love it much at all. Both reviews run in the fantastically argumentative Village Voice Film Guide: 50 Years of Movies From Classics to Cult Hits(Wiley). Celebrating a half-century of Village Voice film criticism—from the personal to the political to the comical to the nearly impenetrable—the book, assembled by former Voicefilm editor Dennis Lim, comprises contributions by Voiceinstitutions (Jonas Mekas, Andrew Sarris, current critic J. Hoberman) and relative unknowns (Oliver Stone?), while homing in on 150 indispensable films and the critiques that panned, lauded, dissected, and occasionally, made them.
