CAN THIS BIRD FLY?

Great casting may make this one soar

The Obie-winning Classic Stage Company certainly has its work cut out for it as it takes on Chekhov’s masterpiece The Seagull. Recent major New York productions have fared poorly with the critics—either casting too many big-name stars (as did director Mike Nichols in 2001) or not finding the right amount of subtlety (which director Trevor Nunn was accused of this fall at BAM) to tell the story of four very different artists striving to reach their dreams. Here’s hoping that CSC has found the right mix, with Academy Award–winning actress Dianne Wiest as Arkadina and the always-superb Tony winner Alan Cumming (who tends to play slimy characters a little too well) as her wandering-eyed lover, Trigorin.
