PRISON BREAK

A birthday party for the Man in Black

On the 1968 classic Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, it’s always a little chilling to hear the hoots of approval from the inmates when the Man in Black sings, “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.” At tonight’s annual Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, which has sold out three years in a row, Alex Battles & the Whisky Rebellion perform At Folsom Prison in its entirety, in honor of its 40th anniversary (we guess you get to play the part of the ornery prisoners). Cash, who died in 2003, would have been 76 years old this month, and film curator Clinton McClung will also be on hand to remember him with a selection of rare Cash film clips and television appearances. Plus, get down with the hillbilly-boogie sound of openers Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Co.; WNYU’s Honky Tonk Radio Girl spins classic country in between sets.
