PUT MY ROOTS DOWN

Philly’s finest get the spotlight at the Apollo

Thankfully, the Roots put on a very atypical hip-hop show: Long praised as the genre’s best live band, the six-member crew includes Kamal on keyboards, Hub on bass, F. Knuckles on percussion, Capt. Kirk on guitar, ?uestlove on drums, and Black Thought on vocals. As the best thing to come out of Philly since cheesesteak, the Roots sprouted in 1987 and released their breakout album, Things Fall Apart, more than 10 years later, taking a more thoughtful, nuanced, and self-critical approach to the usual empty rap bravado. Their most recent effort, Game Theory, released on Def Jam, put the Roots at the top of their game, with killer tracks like the title-track single and “Here I Come.” The Apollo Theater will no doubt get crushed, with two shows in one night.
