More About

Traditional Indian dance gets little play in the mainstream dance world. The fabulously spiritual, precise movement is a marvel to watch. It’s rare to get a chance to see the real thing done with the greatest execution, so when India’s Nrityagram Dance Ensemble comes to town, lovers of Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and other old-school moves make a point to come out. The beauty of the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble isn’t just that each of the performers is exceptionally trained in Odissi (India’s oldest classical dance form), among many others, but also that the company moves and breathes with a synchronicity that’s captivating. This might be because everyone in the company lives together—not as some freaky sexual thing, but in an intense, practicing-monks kind of way. Tonight, Surupa Sen, Bijayini Satpathy, and an ensemble of female dancers present the premiere of Pratima: Reflection and bring India’s temple sculptures to life.
