DRONE HOME

Japan’s Boris test your hearing

Named for a song by early-’80s grunge granddaddies the Melvins, Tokyo trio Boris are known for their headbangable noise-punk and their penchant for experimentation, dabbling in psychedelia, drone metal, avant-garde sound exploration, and sometimes even conventional indie rock. Collaborations with other left-of-center artists such as Japanese noise architect Merz-bow and U.S. drone duo SunnO))) (whose Stephen O’Malley contributes some guitar rumble to the untitled final track of their excellent forthcoming LP, Smile) have garnered them attention from all ends of music fandom. Most impressive, though, is how the group always manages to sound tremendously fresh live even as they shift between their different guises. With Brooklyn-based openers
