Though they started out at a pretty monumental disadvantage in the shape of Jonathan Fire*Eaters biz-hype suicide, The Walkmen have, over the last three or four years, evolved into one of New Yorks most distinctive indie-rock acts: On their most recent set of original material, 2006s A Hundred Miles Off, they convincingly conjured an alternate universe in which Bob Dylan threw down with Television. (Why couldnt we say their most recent album? Cause that year they also released a song-for-song cover of Harry Nilssons John Lennonproduced Pussy Catsproof of distinction if not outright eccentricity.) Columbia University recently ate the bands beloved Harlem studio, so they decamped to Mississippi to record their new one, reportedly due out later this year. Fellow locals White Rabbits play a soul-enhanced variant on post-punk dance-rock.
