Caryl Churchill stages an indecent proposal
Politically, Bush and Blair often hopped into bed together. But what if they actually got up to something sexy under the covers? What a uniquely distressing suggestion! Yet that’s precisely what Caryl Churchill proposes in her cheeky new play, Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? A typically elliptical document, the show presents the relationship between Britain and America as a same-sex amour that threatens to founder over matters such as carbon emissions and trade tariffs. Elegant British (Union) Jack and butch American (Uncle) Sam flirt, fight, kiss, and make up, all while trying to sort through the intricacies of their special relationship. In the play’s American premiere (following its debut at London’s Royal Court), James MacDonald directs Scott Cohen and Samuel West.
