DINOSAUR JR. JR.

J Mascis’s Witch crank it up

Brattleboro, Vermont’s Witch—not to be confused with Witchcraft, Burning Witch, White Witch, or the original L.A. shredder-metal Witch—is the lazy-Sunday side project of Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis. But for a psych-metal trio that doesn’t rehearse, barely tours, and probably has no idea at this point what their plodding ’06 debut even sounded like, their new Paralyzed is a pretty big step in the right direction. Mascis plays drums like he plays guitar—loud, fast, and without much attention to the rest of his band. To the credit of frontman Kyle Thomas and bassist Dave Sweetapple (who record meandering folk oddities together in their real band, Feathers), the rest of Witch seem to have decided that this time, they’re along for the ride. Labelmates Graveyard come from Sweden but ape Cream.
