BACK TO THE FUTURE

Paul Rudnick’s gay crystal ball

Eight years into The New Century, comedic dramatist Paul Rudnick has penned four short plays in which he reveals his take on what the remaining 92 might have in store. Rudnick, who serves as unofficial voice of the gays with his brink-of-mainstream canon (the films In & Outand Jeffrey and the plays Valhalla and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, among others), doesn’t skimp on homo humor: Linda Lavin stars as Helene, a wildly proud mother of three gay children, while Mr. Charles (Peter Bartlett) finds himself banished from Palm Beach for being too gay. Jayne Houdyshell also stars as a Midwestern craftswoman who travels to New York to bury her son. When all of Rudnick’s eccentrics finally meet, the future of Century 21 comes out.
