ABOVE THE CUT

Brazilian company shows some edge

Brazil might be hot, but not every dance troupe based there can represent an impeccable fusion of the region’s fiery moves (we’re not going to name names here). Choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras’s Grupo Corpo manages to blend capoeira, Congado (a religious ritual created by African slaves), jazz, ballet, modern dance, samba, and more with a vibrant energy that screams Carnaval!Tonight, the 21-member company depicts joy and pain starting with Benguelé, an exuberant dance steeped in Afro-Brazilian roots, and then the New York premiere of Breu, a dark new work evoking “extreme isolation, deathly inertia, and devastation” and set to a commissioned score by Latin Grammy winner Lenine.
