LONG ISLAND GANGSTER

Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige take a lap through the suburbs

Others may eventually out-rhyme and outsell him, but Jay-Zwill forever own every venue within walking, driving, and flying range of New York City. His three upcoming Madison Square Garden shows may as well be in Utah, as far as your chances for getting in are concerned, so consider Long Island instead (or, if you’re so inclined, tomorrow night in Jersey). Ostensibly, this latest jaunt is tour support for American Gangster, his latest comeback record, but expect the full catalog from the hip-hop Sinatra. With him is Mary J. Blige, who’s been on top even longer: She was making angst-filled comeback records in the days when Jay thought angst meant “single platinum.” Together, they’re as close to royalty as pop stars come.
