DOWNTOWN CHIC

The Voice’s ’80s street-fashion photographer inspires a film

Throughout the ’80s, Amy Arbus captured eccentric artists, punks, and drag queens in the East Village for The Village Voice. Some of her famous subjects included a pre-stardom Madonna, the Clash making a Martin Scorsese movie on Broadway, and designer Anna Sui in her famous tent dress. See where many of those young trendsetters are now in filmmaker John Spellos’s new documentary, On the Street, in which Arbus tracks down her subjects to photograph them again. After the screening, Arbus and Spellos will be on hand to discuss the impact of those photos and what life was like in the pre-luxury-condo days of the Village.
