The new 12,000-square-foot branch of Deitch Studios in Long Island City has been transformed into a "demolition disco" of installations by the art collective Assume Vivid Astro Focus. The resulting riot of plywood, wallpaper, paint, and neon lights is called Absolutely Venomous Accurately Fallacious (Naturally Delicious), and we hear the opening-night party was really bent. All this is in addition to music and video projections, an interactive zone, and some seriously strange language created especially for the exhibit—sure, there's a bit of a mind-fuck element to the experience, but we figured you'd like it that way. Celebrating the Brooklyn Bridge's B-day
The Brooklyn Bridge is a symbol of optimism, engineering ingenuity, and . . . gullibility. And have we got a bargain for you! Turns out that while she was touring with X back in the day, singer Exene Cervenka made a habit of picking up discarded objects and old photos. Thirty years later, X is stopping tonight at the Fillmore, while Exene's career as an artist, which grew out of her collecting habits, is doing so well that she's having her second solo show in New York: "I have to go back and forth between writing, music, and art or I'd go crazy," says Exene, whose mixed-media pieces have been playful and a bit flirty. But in this new show, "Sleep in Spite of Thunder," her collages have a rawer feel, which she says may have something to do with leaving Los Angeles: "I've always had a love/hate/love relationship with L.A., and I find there are many things I love about it now that are coming back to the surface," she says.
