Terry Riley’s “Loops for Ancient Giant Nude Hairy Warriors Racing Down the Slopes of Battle,” Michael Gordon’s “Every Stop on the F Train” (as performed by the Young People’s Chorus of New York), Harrison Birtwistle’s “Carmen Arcadiae Mechanicae Perpetuum,” and, of course, the late and lamentably misunderstood 9/11 commentator Karlheinz Stockhausen’s transcendent show-closing “Stimmung” stand out among the 27 works on tap during the 21st annual Bang on a Can Marathon. Over the course of its 12 (free!) hours, the country’s most provocative and consistently entertaining new-music event deftly mixes high modernism and classic minimalism with electronic experimentation and slipstream visitors from the pop fringe (such as Dan Deacon’s 4 a.m. performance of “Ultimate Reality 3”). Highlights tend to include anything by BOAC founders Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe, and David Lang, all of whom are represented by new works, and anything performed by the awesome Bang on a Can All-Stars ensemble.
