More About
Though he's now at work on a book of Houston-based rap stars and ghetto landscapes, Beste says he'll continue to return to Norway, adding that he's attached to the country and the people there. Many of the folks he's met in the metal scene remain acquaintances, but a few have become genuine friends. "Norway is a utopian society, in many ways," he says. "The extreme weather is an obvious downside, and I think it breeds a certain type of introversion—that much is obvious, just from the rates of drinking and depression. But it's also the richest country in Europe, one of the richest in the world; there's hardly any homelessness; and its citizens are mostly mild-mannered and well educated. Only thing is, there's virtually no separation between church and state. And metal fans are lashing out against that."
