SOUNDS ALIVE

Music from another hemisphere

Floating Points 2008 is a month-long festival honoring the Hemisphere, a type of speaker favored by electronic musicians, as well as the best thing to happen to amplification since those magical infrared headpieces for elderly, hard-of-hearing theatergoers. Issue Project Room’s sound system, designed by Stephan Moore, consists of hemispherical speakers that amplify sound in a way that mirrors unamplified sound, especially in its interaction with the natural acoustics of a room. Confused? All you need to know is that you’ll hear electronic sounds intended to go through speakers as intimately as if they weren’t coming through speakers at all. For tonight’s opening, catch the work of Chad Laird and Tianna Kennedy, who made a musical montage out of the sounds of the monster-making machines in five Frankenstein films.
June 5-28, 8 p.m., 2008
