While most people are used to getting around by car, choreographer Julie Ludwick grew up flying in small planes to get in and out of her rural Alaskan town. So it’s no wonder that she’s the creative force behind the Fly-by-Night Dance Theater’s Amelia Project, Phase II, a piece inspired by the bold determination of Earhart and other pioneering aviators to conquer the skies. The two-year project started with the debut of Phase I in 2006 and is preparing to make its final voyage this year: Expect to see dancers flying around on a central trapeze to live music while video projections and aerial cameras capture the feeling of soaring like a bird. And if that doesn’t get your head spinning, one little number is performed blindfolded—let’s hope there’s no crash landing.
