A Day in the Country & Smiles of a Summer Night

A Day in the Country (Jean Renoir, 1936). One of the director's most personal films, a perfect example of his art, this exquisite short feature set in summertime around 1860 captures the atmosphere of Jean Renoir's father's paintings. Smiles of a Summer Night (Ingmar Bergman, 1955). A milestone in Bergman's career, this winning comedy, an elegant, sophisticated elegy to transient love, set in a country mansion during a summer weekend during the course of which couples meet, separate and exchange partners benefits from excellent performances by Eva Dahlbeck and Naima Wifstrand. The story formed the basis of Steven Sondheim's A Little Night Music.
