The Feelies return to their original headquarters

Understated indie-pop legends The Feelies are making their high-profile return to active duty (after a decade and a half of dormancy) with a free July 4 Battery Park gig opening for Sonic Youth, one of the many alt-rock outfits who’ve been talking up the Feelies’ outsized influence for years. Considering the band’s New Jersey roots and the intimate dimensions of their sound, though, these shows at Maxwell’s, the tiny Hoboken club that served as the Feelies’ original headquarters, might actually provide a better opportunity to get reacquainted with frontman Glenn Mercer and his mates: It’s unlikely that the outfit’s trademark interweaving guitars—imagine a softer, more cuddly version of Television—will sound much more vibrant anywhere than they do here, bouncing off the walls they helped to build. At 9, also Wednesday, Maxwell’s, 1039 Washington Street, Hoboken, New Jersey,
July 1-2, 9 p.m., 2008
