It’s funny how things fall into place just as they should. For instance, if Winona Ryder hadn’t taken “ill” and given up the role of Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III, Sofia Coppola wouldn’t have received the Raspberry Award for Worst New Star and might still be dabbling in acting. Thankfully, she followed in her father’s footsteps, directing Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, and The Virgin Suicides, her first film, which screens tonight at McCarren Park Pool, about five sisters whose isolated home life and overprotective parents lead them to a ghastly end. Starring Kirsten Dunst, James Woods, and Josh Hartnett, The Virgin Suicides scored Coppola a couple of awards and a devoted following of young fans, and she even met the father of her child (Thomas Mars of Phoenix) while working on the film’s soundtrack. Now if only Dunst and Hartnett could get their careers back into shape.
