Opera is often a moving experience, but rarely so literally as in Lincoln Center’s production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s atonal, angst-ridden work Die Soldaten, staged at the Park Avenue Armory. Based on Jakob Lenz’s 1776 play, the story concerns a downwardly mobile young woman, Marie, who transforms from hot marital property to maligned mistress to beggar woman. As poor Marie changes station, so does the audience. Director David Pountney, who originally created this production for the 2006 RuhrTrienniale, seats the audience on transportable platforms that travel all 220 feet of the playing space and allow spectators to slide in for a closer look. Meanwhile, Steven Sloane conducts the famously difficult score—with military precision, no doubt.
