PITCH A TENT

Go back to camp with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler

Ah, the summer-camp movie: If it doesn’t make you squirm to think about your own awkward sojourns in the woods with a bunch of brace-faced kids, it’s not doing its job. Yes, Meatballs may always reign supreme, but Wet Hot American Summer, the hilarious 2001 parody of all those cheesy ’80s summertime movies (playing tonight at that summer camp for hipsters, McCarren Park Pool), does the genre proud with plenty of bad haircuts, bad counselors, and bad sexual mishaps. Written by comedians Michael Showalter and David Wain (both formerly of MTV’s The State), the film stars Janeane Garofalo as the uptight camp counselor, Paul Rudd as the insensitive hunk, and Amy Poehler as the short-tempered director of Godspell.
