The eighth annual (and, ahem, Village Voice–sponsored) Siren Music Festival returns to Coney Island in Year 1 of the Thor Equities regime. So far, the ominous sky-bound whale that accompanied the last few years of artists’ renderings of the soon-to-be-redeveloped area has not been spotted, and by all accounts the theme park remains the same—for now, anyway (a good enough reason to visit all by itself). But though we may be partisans, these additional facts remain: ex-Pavement guitar slinger Stephen Malkmus headlines, locals (neo-pigfuck machinists These Are Powers, cracked anthemists Parts & Labor, Brooklyn balladeers Dragons of Zynth) emerge to represent, and the youth come from far (Ohio lo-fi punk savants Times New Viking) and wide (Baltimore dreamers Beach House) to further pollute the beaches of South Brooklyn, all in the name of entertaining New York for free. What’s not to like?
