SUMMER LOVIN’

The Public Theater stages a sexual revolution

It’s been a while since the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars—or that anyone’s confused the present moment with the Age of Aquarius. But after a successful concert staging last year, the Public Theater has decided to remount Hair. The “tribal love rock musical,” by James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot, was the theatrical exemplar of the Summer of Love. And speaking of love, Spring Awakening heartthrob Jonathan Groff stars as poor, conflicted Claude, and Will Swenson, late of 110 in the Shade, as the amiable Berger. Diane Paulus—best known for her gender- and genre-bending take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Donkey Show—lets the sun shine in on this Shakespeare in the Park production. We’re very proud that the lovely number “Frank Mills” originated with a Voice personals ad. Bet Time Out’s never inspired a hit song.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: July 22. Continues through Aug. 31, 2008
