CLASS CLOWN

It’s Arj Barker’s show—no nerds allowed

On Flight of the Conchords, Arj Barker plays the boneheaded advice-giving friend Dave, who pretends his parents are his subletters. As a stand-up comedian, Barker’s act isn’t much different: He’s a lot like your high-school class clown who preferred pot and porn to books and studying—and, happily for us, he’s never grown up. Always on the verge of going berserk, he rants about anything that makes him feel stupid—from the condescending tone he perceives Google using when it corrects his spelling mistakes (“Did you mean: vagina” it asks him) to passengers who read books on airplanes (“Just put it away and be bored with me!” he shouts). Back in New York after a two-week stint headlining the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Barker (co-writer of the Off-Broadway hit The Marijuana-logues) performs four shows at Comix. And if you like to heckle, be warned: He’s not afraid to throw down.
