Often a collaborator with the larger-than-life stars of downtown theater, Kenny Mellman has played straight man—so to speak—to the likes of Justin Bond, Neal Medlyn, and Bridget Everett, but the piano whiz is wryly funny in his own right. In his new solo musical, Say Seaboy, You Sissy Boy?, Mellman has the spotlight all to himself. “Rather than sitting down and writing Herb’s autobiography of the Kiki and Herb years, Under the Heel, I decided it would be better for my psyche to tackle my own show,” Mellman says. In Say Seaboy, You Sissy Boy?, he takes on the serious subject of the murder of a U.S. Navy officer in 1992 and explores just why homophobia tends to reside in public restrooms: “You know, just a light, bubbly show for warm summer nights.”
